Malaysian Debut Of Reebok Spartan Race A Huge Success

Over 10,000 participants take part in world’s leading obstacle race held in conjunction with the inaugural National Sports Day

Shah Alam, Saturday – The Malaysian debut of the Reebok Spartan Race saw over 10,000 participants take part in the two-day event that was one of the marquee attractions of the inaugural National Sports Day. The world’s leading obstacle race took place place on 10 & 11 October and even saw Minister of Youth and Sports Khairy Jamaluddin get in the fray when he competed with the race organisers on the second day.

Malaysians got their first taste of the Reebok Spartan Race by tackling the Spartan Sprint, which for this race was a 6.5km course with 25 obstacles along the way. The Sprint was an excellent starting point to becoming a Spartan as it was fun for beginners while the course had plenty of challenges for seasoned racers.

Khairy arrived on the morning of the second day and took part in the race along with Marcus Luer, Founder and Group CEO of Total Sports Asia (TSA). “This was an altogether different and more demanding type of race from what I have done previously. It was a challenging course but ultimately quite exhilarating after I completed it,” said Khairy. “Congratulations to the oprganisers of Malaysia’s first Reebok Spartan Race and it’s obvious from the number of participants over these two days that the interest in these types of ultra-active events is growing and I look forward to more of these events being held in Malaysia,” he added.

Malaysians can certainly expect more Spartan Races in future as the organisers have been encouraged by the turnout over the two days, even despite the slightly hazy conditions. “I think it’s been a huge success. Malaysia was the most logical choice for South East Asia… it’s developed, forward-thinking and sports-oriented. It made perfect sense to plant our flag here and we’ll definitely be back,” said Joe De Sena, founder and CEO of Spartan Race Inc.

According to Marcus that will be as soon as 20th March 2016 as TSA and Spartan Race have already set the date to hold the Spartan Super then, which will be over a distance of 12km+ and 25+ obstacles. “I think we can see that Malaysians are more than ready for the Reebok Spartan Race,” he said. “The participants have been loving it and although everyone says it was hard, which is obviously the whole point of the Spartan race, the smiles at the finish line once you get your medal is unbelievable,” he added. “We know Malaysians want more so registration is now open for the Spartan Super on 20th March 2016 and we will be announcing a different secret location soon so stay tuned to our website and Facebook page,” he followed.

A total of RM30,000 in cash and sponsor prizes were awarded to the winners in the first Reebok Spartan Race in South East Asia. The winner in the Elite Men’s category was Rushad Nanavatty, 37, an independent consultant from the U.S. in his first Spartan Race. A runner who loves being outdoors, Rushad was delighted that part of the course incorporated Malaysia’s famous rainforests. “I have to say hats off to the organisers for a well-organized and imaginatively put together event,” said Rushad. “The race was certainly challenging, especially the spear throw but I’m glad it was towards the end of the race,” he added. Rushad took home RM1,000 cash and other sponsor prizes while second and third place went to Cheang Cheng Tan from Malaysia and Ian Deeth from the U.K., respectively.

Student Colleen R. Augustin, 17, won the Elite Women’s category, bagging RM1,000 along with other sponsor prizes. A regular run participant, Colleen took part in her first Spartan Race together with her brother and mother. “I was shocked to finish first as the course was really tough,” said Colleen. “This is definitely one of the best races I have taken part in largely because it’s a special feeling getting through the obstacles”. Second place went to Pasree Lee while third place was won by Lim Soo Ee. All three winners are from Malaysia.

Pasree Lee also bagged the winner’s trophy in the Women’s Masters category while Andrew Philips won the Men’s Masters category, for men and women above 40. The Spartan Junior Race for children between the ages of 4-13 was won by Matthew Trott in the Boy’s category and Siobhain Doyle in the Girl’s category. Felda Global Ventures (FGV) was awarded with the Biggest Team trophy and provided with their own branded marquee when they registered 200 participants for the race.

Versace designs London’s first fashion-branded residences on Elm Street

Versace designs London’s first fashion-branded residences on Elm Street

Life is a comfortable, luxurious, pampering spa session these days. Opulence has reached such heights that it is hard to differentiate between propriety and hospitality. Prime reason is that everything is getting intermingled now. DICO UK Property Holdings, a wholly owned subsidiary of premium Dubai-based luxury real estate honchos DAMAC, have shook hands with Italy’s fashion sweetheart Versace Homes to offer the best money can buy in the heart of the world, in London. Known as AYKON Nine Elms, the property overlooks the River Thames one side, Westminster Palace and the London Eye on the other. It will have a mix of premium penthouses, 3-2-1 bedroom flats and Manhattan Studio units. It is expected to be complete by 2020. It will have 50 stories and 360 units with lobby, amenities and interiors designed by Versace. The property will have a gym, indoor swimming pool and spa, children’s play area, roof garden and cinema.

This is like a holiday home away from a holiday home. This isn’t the first time that DAMAC has tied in a fashion house or a celebrity partner. Fendi, Donald Trump, Paramount Hotels & Resorts and Tiger Woods Design are all close business friends. All this uber luxury is soon going to be passé. Since NATO has made progress reaching pluto, it will not be too late before people can start owning pieces of the solar system too. Tee hee.

Oz to get Beyonce inspired Curvy Tower

Curvy Tower - BRE

Melbourne will soon get a stunning new building whose complex form has been inspired by Grammy award winning artist Beyoncé’s minimalist music video for the track Ghost. The tower will be 226-m high, located on 134 Spencer Street; the project has been undertaken by the Australian firm Elenberg Fraser.

If you’re wondering what is so uniquely “Beyoncé” about the tower, then check out the curvy contours of the design plan. The shape is inspired by the scene in the singer’s 2014 Ghost music video where a trio of bodies are seen swathed in stretchy fabric as they move and stretch to the beats. “For those more on the art than science side, we will reveal that the form does pay homage to something more aesthetic – we’re going to trust you’ve seen the music video for Beyoncé’s Ghost,” said a quote from the studio.

Curvy Tower - BRE

The unique form was developed using Parametric modelling. “This project is the culmination of our significant research,” said the firm. “The complex form – a vertical cantilever – is actually the most effective way to redistribute the building’s mass, giving the best results in terms of structural dispersion, frequency oscillation and wind requirements.”

The Queen Bey herself has yet to comment on the project which is currently without a completion date.

The Armani Group and Smart Hero Group announce their partnership for Smart Hero-Central Park Plaza Residences in Beijing, China

Milan, 30th June 2015 –The Armani Group is pleased to announce the new partnership between the Armani/Casa Interior Design Studio and Smart Hero Group for a real estate project in Beijing, China for the design of luxurious high-end residential units, common areas and amenities of what has been nominated one of the ‘Top 10 Contemporary Buildings in China’ – the Smart Hero-Central Park Plaza residences.

Smart Hero-Central Park Plaza is located in Beijing’s CBD (Central Business District) area, facing the south gate of Chaoyang Park, the largest urban park in Asia. It will be the leading green building complex in China. The project is part of Smart Hero Group’s long-term strategy to develop branded residences that provide a unique experience to the customer. The architecture has been created by Mr Ma Yansong, an internationally recognised architectural design expert.

With the current rejuvenation of Chinese culture and the rise of China as an important twenty-first century nation, Smart Hero Group and Mr Ma Yansong see this project as emblematic of the country’s present-day dynamism. It is also a pioneering example of the integration of China’s innovative contemporary culture with a more global aesthetic, in this case in the form of the unique design philosophy of Giorgio Armani. Central Park Plaza, according to Smart Hero Group chairman, Mr Zhang Xi, embodies a unique mixture of Western design and Eastern philosophy.

There is a strong emphasis on the green aspect of the development, and Smart Hero-Central Park Plaza reflects the Chinese philosophy of ‘Nature and Man in One’; the development will be thoughtfully and sensitively integrated with the environment of the Chaoyang Park, which features a beautiful lake. The project demonstrates a type of ‘landscaping’ approach, incorporating suggestions of peaks, slopes, mountains and ridges into the design. By successfully blending in with the nearby park and its natural surroundings, the new building will stand as an exemplary example for the future, pointing to a way of life in the city of Beijing that incorporates nature, health and culture.

In 2014, this Smart Hero Group project was selected as one of the ‘Top 10 Contemporary Buildings in China’ as recommended by China’s Ministry of Culture together with senior architectural experts. The Smart Hero-Central Park Plaza ‘Nature and Man in One’ initiative was designated ‘China’s Landmark of Times’ and gained recognition as the ‘Sales Champion of Beijing Business Market in 2014’ due to the overwhelmingly positive response it received during its debut to the public.

Giorgio Armani says: ‘I am very pleased to be collaborating on this new development in Beijing, as I believe the city is one of the world’s most exciting modern metropolises. Furthermore, the Chinese concept of “Nature and Man in One” fits perfectly with the aesthetic philosophy I have developed for Armani/Casa, which always aspires to create a sense of harmony in the living spaces I imagine, and always aims to respect the natural world. A sensitive combination of man-made aesthetics with natural materials and forms is, for me, a form of genuine contemporary luxury.’

Zhang Xi says: ‘I am very pleased to have the chance to collaborate with Armani – a world leading fashion brand, it will be an important milestone for our group business development. We believe the collaboration in Beijing – capital of China will become the benchmark in the real estate market in the country, and gain the international awareness.’

The project is scheduled for completion by end of 2017.

Armani/Casa e l’Interior Design Studio

More than twelve years after its foundation, Armani/Casa is a world leader in the luxury furnishings sector. A byword for elegance and style, it stems from Giorgio Armani’s living dream of a warm, harmonious, highly comfortable and sophisticated haven. Since 2003, the Armani/Casa Interior Design Studio has provided complete interior design services to private individuals and property developers, from the conceptual phase through to supervising the execution. The studio's work involves developing creative solutions – under the artistic direction of Giorgio Armani – that are the product of painstaking architectural research and extensive study into the project’s cultural, geographical and architectural context. In this way, the individual designs are developed to be perfectly integrated into their settings in terms of their features and aesthetic values. The Armani/Casa Interior Design Studio’s research impacts on the selection of all materials, colours and finishes involved in the fit-out, as well as on the design of the built-in or custom-made furnishings; all of this is to ensure each design is unique and in keeping with the client’s requirements. Among the Armani/Casa Interior Design Studio’s most recent projects: Maçka Residences in Istanbul, Turkey, The World Towers in Mumbai, India, Century Spire, in Manila, Philippines, Art Residence by Armani/Casa in Chengdu, China and Residences by Armani/Casa in Miami, Florida. Armani/Casa is present in 40 countries worldwide, with a total of 56 outlets, comprising 27 mono brand stores and 29 shops-in-shops.

Smart Hero Group

The company has property management offices in Beijing, Dalian, Xiamen, Sanya and other leading cities in China. In this cooperation with Armani/Casa, Smart Hero Group will establish a platform for both companies to create a unique dialogue with the culture of China, and, in the process, develop an exclusive environment for living integrating Chinese and Western cultures.

The Asian Entreprenuer - Interview with Marcus Luer , Founder & CEO of Total Sports Asia

I first met Marcus when I owned a Sports Events company in Thailand. He came out and spent a few days at one of our Yacht Regattas. It is awesome to see the business he has built up and I look forward to seeing what events he will be working with next.

What’s your story?

My story started in Cologne, Germany for the first 22 years of my life. I moved to the US to study and graduated with an MBA from TCU (Texas Christian University). During that time the US was awarded the FIFA World Cup and I ended up working at the event in 1994. Prior to that I also had the privilege to work on implementing American Airlines sponsorship program for the World Cup. The FIFA World Cup was such a powerful experience for me that I wanted to stay in the industry. I was always a sports nut so making money with something I love doing was too good to be true. I ended up with my first “real” sports marketing job in Hong Kong working for a small outfit at that time called “Asia Sports Group” (now World Sports Group). I was thrown into the deep end right from the start handling entire events and commercial deals for the Asian Basketball Confederation and then helped set up the Asian PGA Tour. Three years later with my “youthful ignorance” (at the age of 29) I started my own business, Total Sports Asia (TSA) during the height of the Asian economic crisis (1997-98). Eighteen years later we weathered many more Asian crisis and have grown to be one of the leading players in the industry in Asia and in some respect globally. I have now lived longer outside of my home country then in Germany itself. The last 20 years of it in Asia, so clearly Asia is my home and playground in all aspects of life.

What excites you most about your industry?

The sports marketing industry has plenty of challenges and opportunities and I love seeing how we help generate new revenue streams for events, clubs, Leagues, etc. Because of us, these entities can use the money to create bigger and better events and create career paths for athletes. Athletes and teams are able to “inspire” entire cities or nations with their performance. I love being in a stadium and watching thousands of people having a great time because of what we put together.

On the other hand our commercial partners have the opportunity to leverage the power of our sports entity clients and in return generate bigger returns for themselves and their stakeholders. I call it the “Greater Purpose” of TSA and that is to grow the sports side on one end and at the same time grow our corporate clients business as well. Being the agent and conduit in the middle and creating these opportunities for both sides is what gets me up in the morning.

What’s your connection to Asia? I came here at the age of 26, set up my business at 29 and haven’t left since then (20 years later). My kids are mixed and my wife is Thai. So, I am part of this amazing part of the world in many ways.

Favourite city in Asia for business and why?

Singapore from an efficiency point of view. You can get lots of meetings done in a day. Most of the big Asian cities have their own charm and I actually enjoy going to most of them. Travelling in the region is one of my favorite things of my business. TSA allows me to do business in so many different places, with different cultures and way of operating. I love that challenge and diversity and have become quite a chameleon in terms of adapting to the different styles of doing business in Asia.

What’s the best piece of advice you ever received?

Watch your overheads. Don’t ever let that get out of control or you end up working just to pay your staff. From Donald Dell, one of the true pioneers of our industry and a dear friend.

Who inspires you?

I draw inspiration from many people who have overcome the odds and/or have achieved incredible things in their life. I am a big fan of Michael Jordan and Michael Schumacher in the sporting world, Anthony Robbins in the field of Human Psychology and motivation. I have always been fascinated by Billionaire stories and how they achieved their wealth, especially the ones who came from poor backgrounds or had to overcome major obstacles to reach this level.

What have you just learnt recently that blew you away?

I am fascinated by the progress in medicine and what technology can do to prevent and also cure diseases in the future. In our industry, I am big believer in new technology in terms of content distribution and I have no doubt we will play a role in this space in the future.

If you had your time again, what would you do differently?

There are many mistakes I have made in my life and in hindsight I would do them differently. At the same time when I was in the situation I didn’t have the experience or foresight to anticipate the outcomes. So i guess I had to learn these lessons the hard way. At the end they are all part of my life and i am grateful for them.

How do you unwind?

I do sports, not just “talk” sports. I participate in Triathlon’s in the region and enjoy the training part. I train with my two kids at times and love connecting with them that way. Travelling actually is a certain form of unwinding. I like long-haul flights where you are “disconnected” from the world for a while. I wrote my book during plane flights. Just chilling at home with my wife is another simple pleasure in life.

Favourite Asian destination for relaxation? Why?

Thai Islands of any kind. I love sea, beach and sun. Anytime anywhere.

Everyone in business should read this book:

Branded Real Estate - The next big idea in luxury living

What would it be like to live the lifestyle of tennis superstar Maria Sharapova? Or to enter the inner world of F1 racing legend Michael Schumacher?

In an age when super premium properties abound and price is no longer a defining factor for Asia’s super-rich, property developers and buyers are searching for something different. They are not looking for just another expensive apartment with luxurious interior and fittings but something that transcends them.

This is why celebrities, sports stars and luxury brands are endorsing properties around the world, such as Virgin in Moscow, Versace in Dubai or Bulgari in London. Branded properties are also becoming highly popular and marketable in some of Asia’s fastestgrowing cities. From Dubai to Mumbai to Shanghai, branded real estate (BRE) is on the rise. But notes Marcus Luer, group CEO of Total Sports Asia (TSA), it is not easy to find the right brand which can translate into a successful property development.
