SportsFix Lends Support to New Football Tournament in Malaysia

SportsFix, an OTT service operating in Southeast Asia, has backed a new club football competition that is set to launch in the region.

The Boost SportsFix Super Cup pre-season tournament will debut in January at the National Stadium at Kuala Lumpur Sports City in Malaysia.

The competition will be contested by Malaysian team Kelantan FA, Indonesian side Persija Jakarta and Thai outfit Ratchaburi FC.

It will mark the first football event at the National Stadium since it was renovated for the recent edition of the Southeast Asian Games multi-sport event.

The event, which will be streamed live by SportsFix, will also be presented by mobile payment system Boost.

Marcus Luer, group chief executive at event organiser Total Sports Asia, said: “The long-term objective for our new event is to feature teams from across the world and bring teams here from the leagues which we are featuring regularly on SportsFix.tv.

“With the Italian Serie A, Chinese Super League and (Korean) K League also a regular feature on SportsFix, the tournament will only get bigger and better. We expect to have club teams from several other countries participate in the future. For now, we are sure that all three teams from the Malaysian, Indonesian and Thai League will fiercely battle to not only take home the inaugural Boost SportsFix Super Cup but also garner the purse of $10,000 (€8,500).”

Red Warriors Warm Up with Super Cup Tournament

KOTA BARU — The Boost SportsFix Super Cup tournament is the ideal platform to assess the ability of The Red Warriors (TRW) players and coaches as preparation for the Malaysian League (M-League) next season.

Kelantan Football Association (Kafa) president Bibi Ramjani Ilias Khan said the tournament involving Southeast Asia’s major club teams, Persija Jakarta and Ratchaburi FC would be a good warm up for them.

“I would like to thank the tournament organisers for selecting Kelantan for the inaugural tournament because there are other better teams around. It is an honour to represent the country,” she added.

Kelantan will represent Malaysia, Persija will represent Indonesia while Ratchaburi will represent Thailand in the tournament at National Stadium, Bukit Jalil, Kuala Lumpur, from January 13 to 20, 2018. — Bernama

Kelantan to play in the Super Cup

BUKIT JALIL - Former Malaysia Cup champions Kelantan, Indonesia’s Persija Jakarta and Thailand’s Ratchaburi FC will compete in the inaugural Super Cup at the National Stadium on Jan 13-20.

The tournament, which offers US$ 10,000 (RM40,845) to the champions, will be used by Kelantan, who have been struggling of late, to prepare for the 2018 M-League.

Persija are among the top supported clubs in Southeast Asia while Ratchaburi finished sixth in the just-concluded Thai Premier League.

Organisers Total Sports Asia (TSA) hopes the tournament will become an annual affair.

“We aim to have clubs from outside the region in the future,” said TSA group chief executive officer Marcus Luer.

Kelantan FA assistant secretary Kamarudin Mohamad said: “We will field our M-League team in the tournament.

“We are happy and proud to represent Malaysia and we will do our best,” said Kamarudin.

Persija defender Gunawan Dwi Cahyo said his club will use the tournament to prepare for Indonesia’s League One competition next season.

Ratchaburi will open against Persija on Jan 13 before Kelantan take on the Indonesian club three days later. The east coast side will then play Ratchaburi on Jan 20 in the round robin tournament.

It is the first football action at the National Stadium after it was heavily renovated for the recent 29th SEA Games.

“We are excited to see Malaysia’s National Stadium utilised for football. We are confident the National Stadium will provide football fans with a premium experience that will rival any stadium in the world. Kelantan FA or the Red Warriors are well known in Malaysia, having won the fabulous treble – the Malaysian Super League, the FA Cup and also the Malaysia Cup in 2012. They have added on various other accolades in recent years and will be looking to provide a fierce challenge for the domestic silverwares in Malaysia in 2018.

Persija Jakarta is considered the best-supported club in Indonesia with their fans fondly called “Jakamanias”. The team finished 4th in the Gojek Traveloka Liga 1 and is hoping to perform even better next season and the management sees the Super Cup as an important part of their preparation. The team has a strong Fan base in Malaysia too and expects their Jakamanias to show up in full force for their matches.

Ratchaburi FC finished sixth in what many believe is the toughest league in ASEAN, the Toyota Thai Premier League and will be a tough challenger for Kelantan and Persija.

“The long-term objective for our new event is to feature teams from across the world and bring teams here of the Leagues which we are featuring regularly on SportsFix.tv. With Italian Serie A, Chinese Super League and K League also a regular feature on SportsFix, the tournament will only get bigger and better. SportsFix wants to take Southeast Asia by storm

SPORTS marketing agency Total Sports Asia (TSA) didn’t start out with digital ambitions, but it tried to embrace the Internet age as far back as 2000, its chief executive officer Marcus Luer recalls.

“In 2000 we launched totalsportsasia.tv. This was during the first Internet boom period of the early 2000s and at that time, it was still much more about the written content part, the aggregation of where you could go to find all your sports. That didn’t exist at the time, there were similar platforms around the world and we thought there was a way to do something like this in Asia,” he tells Digital News Asia in a recent interview.

Then the dotcom bust hit. “We were too late in the game at the time, so we had spent a certain amount of money and were about to make the whole thing bigger, and then the dotcom bust happened. So in a sense, for us, we never got fully into it, but it gave us the first taste of what the digital world was all about,” he explains.

Like many others, for a reasonable period of time they didn’t really play in that space anymore, he says. “But I had a sense that it was an obvious place for us with our skills. There’re many things on the Internet to do with sports, such as sports apps for fitness but that’s not the space we were in. It took a while and for 20 years we were more in the brick-and-mortar space of sports, running events and creating new revenue streams for sports.”

Entering The Digital World

Then the Netflixes and iflixes of the world emerged, and it became obvious to him that content was shifting from the traditional players to the new world, he says. “I found an old email exchange with Patrick Grove [of the Catcha Group] in 2014. iflix hadn’t existed then; I said we have to figure out how to get into your world.”

However, Luer says he didn’t just want to start something which had a digital element to it. “I wanted to do it in the space I know best, which is sports. The ‘aha moment’ really came when Netflix and iflix started to happen. I also saw that there were pockets in the world where this was happening with sports as well, where companies were taking their content and delivering it in an OTT [over-the-top] environment, taking charge of their own content in a sense. WWE was one of the first ones out there who started their own channel and said ‘I’m not going to wait for a broadcaster to buy my content but I’m going to make it available to my customers directly’.”

Around 2013 or 2014 Luer realised that this was happening. “Good things take a little longer, and now we’re in 2017 and Sportsfix is finally happening. It took us quite a few years to put something together and also go with confidence to the market, to raise the money and do all those things. I think that there was a bit of an evolution to this. We’re taking all that we’ve done for 20 years and pulling it into the digital world,” he explains.

Luer, who has been in Asia for 23 years, points out that traditional television platforms like Astro, are no longer the new kid on the block. “They have a monopoly in their space, but it is running out. The traditional model of bundling content in the form of a cable operator, that model is now fading. In most of the mature markets in the world, they all have declining numbers. What was exciting in the early stages of these companies was that they were basically saying ‘I have 200 channels for you and it only costs you RM200 a month’ and at that time, that was fantastic. But if you do a survey of people, they typically only watch five channels.

“In reality, you’re paying RM200 for five channels, now that gets a little more expensive at RM40 a channel. Where OTT is actually coming from, it’s actually the debundling of things, where you really only pay for what you want to see, you’re no longer paying for a big bouquet of 200 channels. In a sense, it is a pay-as-you-choose model, and I think that’s where the Astros of the world will struggle because their model is based on a hard-bundled bunch of content.”

“In the simplest way to look at it, from the exciting world of big bundles, which is really what drove the cable guys, it’s now going back to debundling, where the customer picks and chooses what he really wants to see and no longer pay a gigantic bill,” he adds.

A different Audience

However, without Astro where do consumers get their sports content? That’s where the Sportsfix service comes into play, Luer says. “We’re not going after the Premier League and such, we’re quite happy for Astro to continue that. What we are doing really is we’re taking on a whole bunch of content that for them doesn’t make any sense because the audience we’re going after are on a mobile device, not a TV screen.”

Luer explains that there is a whole bunch of audiences out there that are different from Astro’s audience and they watch their content on the mobile phone. “So that audience will never most likely be an Astro customer, they’re of a younger demographic. There are others also who don’t have access to a TV or don’t bother with the TV world anymore.”

One of the audiences Sportsfix is targeting is the overseas foreign workers in Malaysia, who consume all their content on their mobile device. “We could deliver Indonesian football content to their device. For Astro that would not make sense, the Indonesians don’t have that kind of money or setup. Astro has to go after the big stuff, we go after the long-tail of sports in the region and that’s how Netflix started too. So we’re saying there’s so much content out there and so many niche markets we can go after, such as the overseas foreign workers.”

Luer explains that while they do not have a large income, they have some disposable income and that’s what TSA is going after. “If you’re a Japanese, German or Korean expat living in this part of the world, you’re most likely with a better job and your disposable income is a little higher, but there’s a high chance that a lot of your sports content is not available out here.

“We’re just lining of a whole bunch of niche content in a sense, that’s the whole game of Netflix and iflix as well. Sportsfix caters to ‘the displaced fan’ or the fans which are spread around this whole region, whether a foreign worker or expat. Or if you are local or studied abroad, you would have been exposed to sports from that part of the world.”

He highlights that Sportsfix is all about live sports content, which is what drives sports. “So what we’re combining is content that no one is catering to it right now, and we’re catering to it via the mobile phone, which is the device of the future,” he says.

The other thing that linear TV struggles with is that replays are co-ordinated by schedules, says Luer. “If I like to watch Champion’s League football, I have to figure out when I want to watch it. It’s just not convenient, the OTT world has the catch-up function, so your prime-time is whenever you want it to be. It’s whenever you have the time to watch it, the linear world can’t programme that way.”

“We’re trying to put the power in the hands of the consumer. If you’re a hard-core fan, you can check the live game off and on, whenever you have the time. OTT is away from the structured habits of linear TV…you can be wherever and have access to the content. The way we’re looking at it, we’re trying to create the ultimate sports platform, where the content is the underlying asset—live first, catch up second — and we’re building the ultimate indulgence for sports fans. We will have statistics, fantasy games, we will have all the other stuff which make sports fun. We will also have a social media platform so you can communicate with everyone who is watching the same stream,” Luer explains.

SportsFix Streams Live and OnDemand Sports Across Asia Powered by Brightcove Video Platform

SINGAPORE, Oct. 23, 2017 /PRNewswire/ — Brightcove Inc. (NASDAQ: BCOV), the leading global provider of cloud services for video, today announced that Sportsfix, the new ASEAN sports-focused OTT platform, has selected the Brightcove Live platform to deliver premier live and VOD local sports content across the region. Launched in July 2017, SportsFix features mainly live but also a variety of sports content such as news, highlights, and on demand content.

SportsFix is ASEAN’s first and only OTT platform that delivers live and VOD sports content, with a focus on live streaming as a premium offering. The platform was conceptualised and launched to serve initially a large untapped niche segment of overseas foreign workers (OFWs) in the region. Catering to an audience who tend to consume content largely on mobile devices after working hours and on weekends, the service is offered on the mobile web and apps.

“When we embarked on this venture, our focus was the niche segment of overseas foreign workers in the ASEAN region. Our ambition was to deliver the best streaming video experience to our viewers powered by the best video platform technology. Brightcove checked off all the boxes for us. We found that the Brightcove video platform offered us the scalability to launch multiple websites, with the ability to go to market quickly. No other vendor could meet our needs the way Brightcove does,” Carl Kirchhoff, CEO at SportsFix, said.

As part of their growth strategy, SportsFix has partnered with telcos across the region to deliver the content directly to mobile devices because OFWs tend to use mobile data rather than Wi-Fi network to stream content. Sportsfix aims to become the go-to place for sports fans in the ASEAN area, by signing up rights to stream matches from Chinese Super League, Liga 1 Indonesia, Thai League, PBA (Philippine Basketball Association) and many other regional leagues for its subscribers.

“Sportsfix is a great example of how an up-and-coming media company can launch and deliver live and VOD sports content directly to its user base and unlock revenue opportunities from day one. We are immensely proud to work with a regional sports innovator like SportsFix who by partnering with Brightcove is taking advantage of the latest innovations, market vision, and world-class support to deliver an OTT service to market easily and quickly,” Ben Morrell, general manager, Asia, Brightcove, said.

TSA connects Axiata Arena

Kuala Lumpur, 16 January 2017 – In its capacity as Perbadanan Stadium Malaysia’s (Stadium Corporation Malaysia) commercial sponsorship consultant, TSA is proud to secure the first Naming Rights partnership for the new KL Sports City.

Leading Asian telecommunications group, Axiata Group Berhad (Axiata), has come on board as the naming right partner for the Putra Indoor Stadium - the indoor stadium of KL Sports City. The venue will be renamed Axiata Arena when it reopens in July 2017. Currently undergoing extensive upgrading works, the multi-purpose indoor arena will become a fully integrated and high connectivity world-class venue for sports, entertainment and culture, on par with international destination venues such as the Staples Center in Los Angeles, the O2 Arena in London and the Mercedes Benz Arena in Shanghai. The venue will be hosting the KL 2017 SEA Games in August this year and will be the go to destination for major music and sports events in the country.

YB Brigadier General Khairy Jamaluddin, Minister of Youth and Sports who announced the country’s first naming rights partnership, commented: “The partnership between Axiata and Perbadanan Stadium Malaysia is geared towards benefiting Malaysia in promoting Kuala Lumpur as a regional sports, entertainment and cultural hub, attracting global talent, connecting communities and creating employment opportunities while showcasing the nation’s strong digital assets and infrastructure. Axiata Arena will be a focal point of national and regional attention as we host the SEA Games and the Para Games this year. The venue will also be the epicenter of creating a vibrant and active nation, in line with the Transformasi Nasional 50 (TN50) initiative and will support the government’s initiative to create a ‘Sporting Nation’”.

Tan Sri Jamaludin Ibrahim, Group Chief Executive Officer, Axiata Group Berhad said: “For Axiata, this partnership meets three objectives for the Group. Firstly, this is yet another step in our commitment to national contribution which follows our other sponsorships such as the Celcom Axiata Malaysian Open and, in the past, the Axiata Cup. Secondly, as a leading regional brand, the naming of Axiata Arena will augment our international branding to a worldwide audience especially given the upcoming SEA Games and many more international events to be held there. Lastly, the venue will be the test bed and launchpad for Axiata and Celcom’s latest technologies and digital services with the use of apps and online applications for services, sales and real-time information. Making the arena one of the most digitally advanced sporting and entertainment venues, equal to the very best globally.”

TSA Group CEO, Marcus Luer, said: “We are very excited to start 2017 with such a big announcement. A lot of hard work has gone into this project and I am very happy to see the Axiata Logo on the building. I want to thank the Minister for his confidence in us and Tan Sri for his support over the years. I have no doubt that this great project will set a new benchmark in Branding and Venue marketing in the country.

The new and improved KL Sports City is the ultimate playground and destination for all major sports and entertainment events in Malaysia and its region. Phase 1 of the upgrade will be completed in time for the SEA games in August 2017 which would include the National Stadium, Putra Stadium, the National Aquatic Centre and National Hockey Stadium with improved integration to the current public transportation. Phase 2 will see the complete creation of KL Sports City that will consist of new world-class facilities including a shopping mall, convention centre and Hotel among others.
